Who Qualifies for Laser Acne Scar Treatment?

laser acne scar treatment

Scars form on just about everyone for a variety of reasons. For some people, they may prove bothersome and compromise aesthetics. While scars may not be removed completely, laser acne scar treatment is the most effective way to minimize its thickness and appearance. Here at Dundee Dermatology, we are thrilled to offer this revolutionary cosmetic option our patients and encourage you to learn more about it.

What is Laser Acne Scar Treatment?

In laser acne scar treatment, the light from the laser is concentrated to diminish the aspect of a particular unwanted scar. Along with treating acne scars, our lasers can help reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and various other blemishes. When you visit our specialist, your scars will be examined and you can ask questions about acne scar treatment. For this particular treatment, downtime is reduced to five to seven days. This is in contrast to other laser-based procedures, whose downtimes can run as long as three weeks.

What Causes Acne Scars?

After an injury or inflammation, the body tries to heal the area. In the case of acne, the inflammation is caused by too much of the skin’s natural oil, sebum, clogging a hair follicle. This gets mixed with dead skin cells and the natural bacteria that are on your face. There are several grades of acne. The mildest form is on the epidermis or top layer of skin and doesn’t usually leave a scar if it is not poked or pinched. Inflammation that goes into the dermis or deeper layer of skin damages the structure of the skin. As the skin tries to heal the damage it may produce too much collagen which results in raised scars or too little which results in sunken scars.

Two Kinds of Lasers

At Dundee Dermatology we use two kinds of lasers for acne scar treatment. The Fraxel and the Lumenis® Fractional CO2 are our two ablative laser systems, both of them capable of providing you a speedy, powerful, and effective skin resurfacing treatment. Some people also choose to combine laser acne scar treatment with other non-surgical options such as BOTOX® Cosmetic.

You no longer have to live with unwelcome acne scars. To find out more about laser acne scar treatment and how it may be able to benefit you, we encourage you to get in touch and make an appointment with Dundee Dermatology! At our convenient location in West Dundee, our caring team of dedicated professionals will be happy to explain the process in full, answer any questions you may have, and help you decide which route is best for you.
