Tattoo Removal Explained

Tattoo regrets can be erased with laser tattoo removal at Dundee Dermatology! Tattoo ink is removed by using specific wavelengths of light which pass through the skin but are absorbed by the tattoo ink. When the ink absorbs the light, the ink is shattered into tiny particles small enough to be engulfed by the body’s natural defense cells. It is the body’s own immune system that carries away the pigment particles resulting in fading of the tattoo.

Different colors of tattoo ink will require different wavelengths of light for effective removal. In our office we use the Lutronic™ SPECTRA Q-switched system to help effectively eliminate all ink colors. Q-switched means the laser fires very rapidly, allowing us to treat a variety of skin tones without damaging the skin.

The Treatment
A single treatment will produce some results, but optimal results could require 2-12 treatments. The number of treatments depends on the age of the tattoo, the colors of the tattoo, the depth and density of the ink, and the patient’s skin tone. To increase comfort during the treatment, topical numbing cream may be applied and a device that blows extremely cold air will be used to cool the skin. The laser energy is then applied during which you may feel heat and hear snapping sounds. The length of each treatment session will depend on the size of the tattoo. Afterwards ice packs can be used to soothe the skin if necessary.
