Emsella Treatments for Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a problem that is much more common than you may realize. The experience of losing bladder control when sneezing, coughing, or jumping can become a part of a person’s daily life. It can be frustrating and embarrassing and can cause you to make life changes such as avoiding certain activities or having to wear pads.

While Kegel exercises can help to strengthen your pelvic floor muscles over time, a lot of time and effort needs to be invested to get the results you’re looking for. Surgery is also available to treat this condition, but this is a much more invasive option.

Emsella is a third option that can help many people suffering from urinary incontinence. It is non-invasive, highly effective, and comes with very minimal side effects. At Dundee Dermatology we can treat both women and men with this condition.

What Is Emsella

Looking at the Emsella device for the first time, you might think you are looking at a normal chair. But this chair is equipped with strong electromagnetic waves that stimulate the muscles in your pelvis to contract. These contractions are similar to the sensation that you might feel while performing Kegels, but they are much stronger than you can manually achieve.

During one Emsella session, your pelvis also contracts more than you can fit into one exercise routine. During a 30-minute Emsella session, your pelvic muscles will contract up to 11,200 times. When you’re positioned correctly in the chair, Emsella will target the entire area of your pelvis. The electromagnetic waves can reach the deeper muscles near your bladder, uterus, and bowels.

The Emsella device is so effective that you may notice a reduction in your urinary incontinence after just one session. However, we’ll likely have you come in for multiple sessions so that you can experience the best results.

What Does Emsella Treat?

Emsella is FDA approved to treat male and female incontinence. But the benefits of the treatment can extend even further. The treatment tightens the muslces of the vagina and strengthens the pelvic floor, both of which can increase sexual response and performance. Many of our patients have reported increased confidence and satisfaction in the bedroom both for themselves and their partners after Emsella treatments.

What Are the Benefits of Emsella Treatments?

There are many benefits to Emsella treatments that make it the preferred option in many different situations. Here are some of the reasons we may recommend Emsella to help with your male or female incontinence:

The Treatment Is Non-Invasive

Every surgery comes with risks and can be disruptive to your life. The benefit of an Emsella treatment is that you don’t have to go under the knife. If you are hesitant to seek surgery for your incontinence, Emsella can be a great alternative.

The Treatment Is Fast

Emsella is a very fast in-and-out treatment. One session only takes 30 minutes to complete. It is easily scheduled in the middle of your busy day.

You Can Be Fully Clothed During the Treatment

For the Emsella treatment, you can be fully clothed throughout the entire process. It can be done wearing the clothes you wore to work or to your yoga class. You simply come into the office and then sit on the chair for 30 minutes while the device does the rest of the work.

There Is No Recovery Time

You don’t have to plan for any downtime after an Emsella treatment. Once you are done, you can immediately get back to your day. This is the type of treatment you can schedule during your lunch break or on the way to pick up your kids from school.

There Are Minimal Side Effects

You won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the Emsella treatment. However, you can think of it as a muscle workout for your pelvic floor. Afterward, you may experience some muscle soreness and mild muscle spasms just like you might expect after leg day at the gym. Some of our patients also report mild local skin redness that goes away after a short amount of time.

What Does a Typical Treatment Plan Look Like?

A typical Emsella treatment at Dundee Dermatology will be six treatments, generally over a three-week period. After you have undergone this series of treatments, we may recommend coming back for maintenance treatments. We treat each case individually and will come up with a plan that works perfectly for you.

We’ll start with a consultation to design your personalized plan. Your consultation will be just like any other doctor’s appointment. We will get a full medical history to make sure that the Emsella treatment is the right fit for you, and we’ll talk to you about the goals that you want to achieve through treatment.

When it’s time for your first appointment, we’ll lead you back to the Emsella chair and start the device. We’ll work with you to make sure you are seated in the perfect position to target all of the necessary muscles. You will feel your muscles contracting and you may also feel some tingling, but there won’t be any pain. Once you are seated comfortably, you can feel free to relax, put on some headphones, or read a book.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Emsella?

Anyone with stress incontinence (urinary leaking when you sneeze, cough, jump, or do other activities) is a good candidate for the Emsella treatment. However, the treatment is not recommended for individuals who have had radiation therapy, who have metal devices such as a copper IUD, knee or hip replacements, or who have a pacemaker.
